Our Ingredients
We source the highest quality available for our Gut Love ingredients.
Boswellia
Boswellia serrata is another potent anti-inflammatory working on similar pathways as mesalamine that has been studied against and with IBD medications. Studies show Boswellia serrata can be equally as effective as some IBD medications when dosed appropriately yet better tolerated (Source) as well as inducing remission in IBD (Source, Source).

B Vitamins
Our B vitamins are provided in their natural and/or activated forms for superior absorption. Those with compromised guts need higher amounts of B vitamins than other generic supplements can provide.
B vitamins are essential for numerous reactions in the body such as:
- converting food into energy
- producing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin
- supporting healthy neurological and cognitive function

Chelated Minerals
Chelation is the bonding of minerals to amino acids, which results in molecules that are more bioavailable and better absorbed and assimilated by the body.

Curcumin
Curcumin is a potent anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants, which work on similar pathways like mesalamine (Source). The form most well-studied in IBD and showing the most positive results is Curcumin Meriva (Source). Curcumin Meriva alongside IBD medications can produce superior treatment results (Source).

DGL
Supports mucosa by promoting mucous production, which can act as a barrier to acid in the stomach and esophagus. (Source)

Folate
Folate, in the form of methylfolate, helps support normal folate levels. Folate is an essential B vitamin – Vitamin B9 – which humans cannot produce on their own. Folate, or vitamin B9, is an umbrella term for all forms of the nutrient including folates, folinic acid, folic acid, and methylfolate. Although folic acid is broadly used, the methylfolate version is more bioavailable, meaning it is more biologically active and doesn’t require metabolic activation. It’s also less likely to mask a B12 deficiency and a better choice when taking medications that inhibit folate (like NSAIDs and diuretics). Additionally, high intakes of folic acid have been associated with a negative impact on precancerous growths in the colon and natural killer cells which affect the immune system, while methylfolate cannot lead to these high levels.

Glutamine
Glutamine, a conditionally essential amino acid, is necessary to consume when levels are low (such as in vegans, vegetarians, and low dairy intake) or in times of stress and/or disease. Glutamine invokes an anti-inflammatory response by decreasing inflammatory production of cytokines. Also helps create more glutathione, one of the body’s most valuable antioxidants. Glutamine has a protective nature for gastrointestinal mucosa cells and helps repair gut permeability (leakiness). (Source, Source)

Hesperidin, Rutin & Quercetin
Bioflavonoids and antioxidants found in citrus fruits (hesperidin) and various other foods regarded for their health benefits, such as olives, raspberries, plums, currants, grapes and asparagus (rutin), and apples, red onion, cranberries, kale (quercetin).

NAC
Has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. NAC counteracts oxidative stress in the intestinal mucosa and recycles antioxidants vitamin C and E. NAC increases glutathione (a powerful antioxidant) levels in the body, which are rapidly depleted in times of stress and disease. (Source)

Omega 3's
Omega 3’s can be helpful in reducing inflammation and disease activity in IBD; Omega 3 fatty acids tend to increase a friendly gut bacteria called Akkermansia muciniphila. Higher levels of this gut bacteria seem to correlate with a healthier gut barrier.
EPA/DHA: A common recommended amount of EPA/DHA in adults with IBD is 1g-3g EPA/DHA per day, which can be accomplished through food or by supplement. If opting for a supplement, choose an enteric coated fish oil capsules with 2-3 grams of EPA/DHA for the most benefit regarding inflammation reduction and maintaining remission of IBD.

Probiotic Strains
Probiotic strains:
- Lactobacillus Plantarum 299v: Is a well-absorbed probiotic that resists stomach acid and bile and is helpful for reducing abdominal pain, gas, and bloating. One study showed a 31% remission vs 15% and 24 of the 39 participants saw a 50% reduction in symptoms helpful for reducing abdominal pain, gas, and bloating (Source).
- Lactobacillus paracasei 8700:2: has been shown to possess strong antagonistic effects against harmful bacteria, to provide increased antioxidant activity, and to increase cell mediated immunity. Can reduce the severity of the common cold and plays a role in immune function (Source, Source, Source)
- Lactobacillus Plantarum HEAL9: has been shown to possess strong antagonistic effects against harmful bacteria, to provide increased antioxidant activity, and to increase cell mediated immunity. Can reduce the severity of the common cold and plays a role in immune function (Source, Source, Source)

Quercetin
Quercetin attenuates oxidative stress and minimizes inflammation across several cell types as well as reducing oxidative DNA damage and lowering blood pressure (Source)

SunFiber or PHGG
SunFiber is the fiber in Back to Balance, and is unique in that it remains liquid instead of creating a gel in the intestines, making it widely used in many applications. PHGG has been proven safe and effective in both human and animal studies in promoting gut health.
Our PHGG is useful for both constipation and diarrhea symptoms. It is safe for adults and children and is easy to mix into tea or coffee without changing or compromising the taste.
PHGG additionally promotes mucosal healing in those with IBD.
Moreover, our PHGG is a natural remedy for IBS symptoms and normalizing stool patterns. PHGG promotes digestive health and offers a synergistic benefit when combined with probiotics.
The PHGG in Back to Balance helps to attenuate IBD associated changes in the microbiome.
Repeatedly using Gut Love Back to Balance improves stool form and beneficial bacteria in the gut.

Vitamin D3
It’s long been established that vitamin D is extremely important for bone health, but in recent years it has been recognized as a key regulator in immune function as well, with evidence to suggest vitamin D as a regulator of gastrointestinal inflammation (Source). Studies show that up to 30-40% who suffer from IBD also have Vitamin D deficiency, low levels are associated with increased disease activity, and vitamin D may have a positive impact on the gut microbiota (Source).
Ultimately, adequate vitamin D is associated with:
- Improved and reduced frequency of IBD symptoms
- Decreased risk for flares
- Reduced risk of IBD onset, particularly in Crohn’s Disease
- Regulation of immune function
- Reduced permeability of intestinal immune cells
- Improved gut barrier function
- Attuned intestinal microbiota
- Improved bone and muscle function
- Decreased risk of colorectal cancer

Vitamin E
Vitamin E is provided as gamma- and delta-tocotrienols, which are more potent antioxidants and have other beneficial properties beyond those typically contained in commercial supplements (alpha-tocopherol).

Vitamins K1 and K2
Provided as vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 (as MK-4 and MenaQ7® Full Spectrum as MK-6, MK-7, MK-9). Vitamin K is best known for its role in proper blood clotting, which is the principal role of K1, as well as provided by K2. The K2 form, however, is specifically needed for healthy bones and teeth, as well as proper blood vessel integrity and function.
